Explaining Graphic Design

I feel like I should send this to everyone who asks me what I do for a living and then gives me blank stare when I try to explain it.

She is so rad and I totally want her hair.

Absurd Overheard

Probably the best thing I've seen on the internet all week. Came across the site Absurd Overheard while perusing Karen Kurycki's portfolio site, which is AMAZING (you all know how I love watercolor work). Visit both. Now.

Simon was a keynote speaker at Design Camp® 2012 and then went right into this speech. He mentions us a couple of times, too.

Book Lust: Sign Painters

Faythe Levine is at it again. I already have her awesome Handmade Nation book and now I can add her new release Sign Painters to my holiday wish list. I'm so envious of anyone who can paint like this. So. Cool.

The Distillery

I wonder if I can convince my boss to turn the pressroom into a concert venue... probs not, but this is cool. Music and art... in Australia! Be sure to check out their site–they have some really nice work.

Other People's Opinions

I was having what you might call a crisis of confidence this morning after dropping off my poster for this years' Poster Offensive.  Suddenly I thought it wasn't as good as my previous submissions, what was I thinking!? (Didn't help that a friend said that maybe my previous work was my "To Kill a Mockingbird." What?! ).

Alas, my officemate sent this video to get me out of my funk. Thanks, friend.

Made by Erin Jang, aka Indigo Bunting. She's selling a print of this for a great cause, too.

These are just too good to not share, so I'm just going to condense it all down into one post. Be sure to check the Rookie site where these all come from.

Haute Crap by Aesthetic Apparatus

Aesthetic Apparatus now makes Haute Crap.

How much do I heart the idea behind this?! Such a great way to expand the reach of their business without really changing what they do. Genius.

13 by 2013

About this time last year I participated in oh, hello friend's 12 by 2012 challenge–to get a list of 12 things done before ringing in 2012. I totally killed my list, so I thought I would do a 13 by 2013 this year.

Here goes:

1. Print New Zealand pics (and put them in the album I've already purchased).
Done! Though I gave the album to my mom for Xmas... Guess I'd better do a reprint for myself. 12/23/2012

2. The obligatory gym goal: hit up the gym 3 times a week. Minimum. Sounds easy, but it's really hard to make time at this time of year.

3. Pull the trigger and actually buy a new TV or shut up about it.

4. Hang up bedroom curtains. For realz, yo.
Done! Thanks to my friend Rachel for the use of her tools and expert eye. 11/4/2012

5. Frame the following posters: Draplin MN print, Hamilton Wood Type Coffee Print, Sunshine Print, Expletive Print, Tropical Print, Poster Offensive, Ideas Poster and Plaid Studios Coffee print. Then convince someone to buy this poster for me for xmas and frame that. (I'm running low on wall space, ps.)

6. Paint my bathroom. White or Gray. or Bright?
Done! Went with a dark gray, now I'm deciding if it's too gray. Indecision. 12/10/2013

7. Get my new leather boots repaired. (Scuffed them already, dammit!)

8. Buy colored jeans. I really like these teal ones.
Done! Thank you, Target. (I got the bright teal pair) 11/24/2012

9. Design projects: Poster Offensive, MN Nice Poster, New Years Cards
Poster Offensive Done! 11/2/2012
MN Nice Done! 11/12/2012

10. Get the struts in my car fixed.
Done! Expensive, but a load off my mind. 11/15/2012

11. Make the xmas gifts I have in mind (it's a surprise, so I can't say!)
Done! See #1 12/23/2012

12. Knit Cowl Scarf (or at least learn the stitch and get a good ways in, finish before spring)

13. Finish the quilt top I started in 2012 (it's currently all over the floor of my living room in the attempts to force myself to finish).
Done! 12/23/2013

Cool Skate Video?

I'm not much for all the skate videos out there (they all seem the same to me), but I have to admit this one was done fairly well.

Sleepwalk With Me

I have exactly one more day to get my ass to the theater to see this. I'm so pissed I missed Ira Glass when he was in town! Gdammit!

ARTCRANK Follow Up

I've mentioned ARTCRANK sporadically over the past year, so now I thought it's time for a little personal horn-tooting (you've been warned):

I was truly honored to be involved in so many facets of ARTCRANK this year. Not only was I an artist, but I was featured in a Metro Mag article, a volunteer at the show (working the poster sales table) and got to be a part of this mini-documentary.

The guys from Royal Antler put the documentary together, filming editing, etc (I seriously don't know where they found the time to do this ON TOP of their day jobs). Of course I'm ga-ga for the Doomtree soundtrack (you know I can't resist a good song over amazing footage).

Special thanks to Charles Youel for putting it all together. Bravo, good sir. Good times are had by all at your events.

Melbourne

I have a soft spot in my heart for anything Australian. My mom and I took a trip together right after I graduated university and it was really one of those memories I think I'll always cherish (super cheesy, but oh so true). Melbourne was our first stop, so I really perk up when I hear/see anything Melbourne related.

Enter this really great animation. Short, sweet and to the point. Love it.

I've been a fan of Draplin ever since we brought him in for Design Camp in 2009 (recapped nicely here by Miss Lisa Valley), so I was pumped to see that he is first up in the lineup of speakers for this years Walker Insights.

Need more incentive to go see him? Just watch this little diddy.

Hair Envy

So, by now you all know about my Pinterest obsession- and by far my favorite pins are all the glorious hair ideas. A few weeks ago I dyed my hair brunette and then today I saw the post below- dude, how much do  I love her ombre blond tips. *sigh* I will be attempting this asap.

Vacation Plans

Places I'm planning on hitting up in 2012:

New York, NY! (Yes, so soon. It's a must.)

Seattle, WA (my bff just got a job there!!)

Portland, OR (to see Em, crazy girl who lives in Bend, OR)

Source: google.com via Diane on Pinterest

Austin, TX (to visit my friend Kat, who I miss dearly–especially when I'm wandering the stalls of our farmer's market alone...)

And I want to use my passport this year- suggestions!? Greece, Ireland and India are all on the top of my list!

Treat Yo Self

Best clip I've seen so far in 2012. Aaaand it links to the gag reel for Parks and Rec, which is something like 15minutes long–I don't even watch the show and I got sucked into that... frick.

Who wants to have a "treat yo self" day with me? We'll buy some "fragrances!"
