"Never be afraid to just do."

Simon was a keynote speaker at Design Camp® 2012 and then went right into this speech. He mentions us a couple of times, too.

"Never be afraid to just do."

"Please, where possible, don't think of design as a job."

Design Camp 2011 Preview: Jolby!

That's right, I'm on the committee for AIGA MN's Design Camp yet again... don't judge.

(Btw, registration is filling ridiculously fast, so be sure to get in on this early).

I can't even begin to say how excited I am that Jolby is speaking at Design Camp this year! I have a complete design crush on the patterns and textures that are woven throughout their work. Aaaand it all seems so FUN!

I can't wait, it's going to be a blast to have these dudes up north for the weekend...

repost: Doyald Young

Found this over on Frank Chimero's blog, along with Frank, Doyald was one of our speakers at Design Camp 2010. Sadly, I wasn't able to see him speak (I was running around setting up a workshop), but I did have the pleasure of having breakfast with him- a truly delightful experience. Watch below and you'll see why: he's just a delightful person!

Design Camp re-cap: Studio On Fire workshop

I had the pleasure of working with Studio On Fire at the workshop they hosted at this year's Design Camp. It was two tiring days of cleaning and sorting woodtype, wiping down photopolymer plates and scrubbing wood planks- but totally worth it! People were pumped, not to mention they made some really great stuff!

Check out SOF's blog Beast Pieces for complete coverage. I nabbed some of their photos here for a sneak peek.

Post Design Camp ReCap : Roshi Givechi

Supposedly there's a video out there someplace as well. If anyone knows where I can find that, let me know!

AIGA MN Design Camp Preview: Even More Frank

Frank has been writing a series on his blog entitled The Back Side of Your Gullet is Decadent and Depraved, they are by far my favorite pieces of his writing. In the latest edition there was a blurb that really struck a cord with me- seems to be what we all hope 26 will be (or was).

"A girl suggested that being 26 was the perfect age. It was even, and you were closer to thirty than twenty, but still well shy of it, whatever awful thing being thirty signified to her. Hopefully, at that point you would feel invigorated with your clarity of direction and purpose, and skilled enough to execute. It was almost like you had done enough to feel like you were well on your way to fulfilling whatever you were supposed to do with this tiny life of yours. We all nodded in agreement. Little did we know that 26 would come, the world would change around us faster than we could change ourselves, and we would still feel like babes."

AIGA MN Design Camp Preview: More Frank

What can I say, I'm really excited about seeing Frank Chimero at Design Camp.

(if I could get a print of this, I would- pretty much sums up the way I try and live)

And a few more dabbles of thought from his Ethos page

"If not now, when?"

"Simple does not have to mean unstimulating."

"There's nothing keeping you from doing the sort of work you wish."

"There are no secrets or shortcuts. Work hard."

"Be honest."

AIGA MN Design Camp Preview: Frank Chimero

Thought I should show some of Frank's work as well. One thing that really draws me to this guy is that he actually commits time to his personal projects. Definitely something I've been thinking a lot about lately.

Some of my fav projects below (all images from his site).

AIGA MN Design Camp Preview: Frank Chimero

I am once again on the committee that is coordinating AIGA MN's annual event of Design Camp. If you live in the midwest (or even if you don't) and are a designer, this is a not-to-be-missed event.

A couple hours north of the Twin Cities, over 300 people from the design community will come together in a beautiful lodge setting for a weekend of design tips, type snobbery and flowing libations.

Our lineup of speakers this year is top notch: Roshi Givechi (from IDEO), Frank Chimero, Doyald Young and Karim Charlebois-Zariffa.

I've been following Frank's blog for quite some time now and I am PUMPED to see him speak!

A few of my favorite bits from his writing:

Nighthawks (one of my all-time favorite paintings)

and a must see Conan clip that I'd forgotten about, until Frank re-posted it (wonderfully wonderful):
